Abstract

Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a pivotal mechanism contributing to age-related neurodegenerative disorders (ANDDs), yet its role remains poorly defined. This study employs a longitudinal cohort design with advanced imaging and biochemical assays to analyze mitochondrial parameters in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. We found significant correlations between mitochondrial impairment and cognitive decline, highlighting a 35% reduction in ATP production linked to altered mitochondrial dynamics. These findings suggest a paradigm shift in our understanding of mitochondrial contributions to ANDDs and pave the way for targeted therapeutic strategies.
