Evaluating the Impact of Microbiome Composition on the Efficacy of Anticancer Immunotherapy: A Case Study in Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract

The interaction between gut microbiota and cancer therapies has emerged as a pivotal area of investigation in oncology. This study explores the correlation between microbiome diversity and the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors in breast cancer patients. Using a cohort of 150 individuals, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize gut microbiota and integrated this data with clinical outcomes. Our findings reveal a significant association between high microbiome diversity and improved therapeutic efficacy, with patients exhibiting diverse microbiomes achieving a 30% greater overall response rate (p < 0.05) compared to those with lower diversity. This research underscores the potential of microbiome profiling as a biomarker for predicting immunotherapy response, paving the way for personalized treatment strategies in oncology.
