https://lumoscia.com/index.php/smp/article/view/833

This study examines governance mode selection—vertical integration versus strategic outsourcing—among fabless semiconductor firms navigating heightened geopolitical disruption and supply chain volatility between 2015 and 2023. Drawing on Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) and the Resource-Based View (RBV), we analyze a panel dataset of 114 publicly listed fabless chipmakers across the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, and the Netherlands. Using fixed-effects logistic regression and instrumental variable estimation, we identify asset specificity, technological uncertainty, and relational embeddedness as primary determinants of governance escalation toward vertical integration. Counterintuitively, firms with high relational embeddedness in foundry partnerships demonstrate a significantly lower propensity to internalize wafer fabrication capacity, even under severe supply constraint conditions. Our findings offer nuanced strategic prescriptions for executives navigating the make-or-buy boundary in capital-intensive, IP-sensitive industries.
Alex BakerRiley ParkerAlex LewisJordan Walker

2026-05-122026-05-1241324Beyond Dynamic Capabilities: Reconceptualizing Organizational Resilience as a Recursive Governance Mechanism in Hypervolatile Competitive Landscapes
https://lumoscia.com/index.php/smp/article/view/831

Organizational resilience has been predominantly theorized as an adaptive response capacity embedded within dynamic capabilities frameworks; however, this conceptualization insufficiently accounts for the recursive, self-referential governance structures that sustain competitive advantage under systemic environmental turbulence. Drawing on a longitudinal mixed-methods dataset encompassing 214 multinational enterprises across nine industries (2019–2024), this study employs structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to interrogate the boundary conditions of resilience-as-capability. The findings reveal that resilience operates not merely as a second-order capability but as a recursive governance mechanism—iteratively reconfiguring institutional logics, resource orchestration protocols, and stakeholder alignment processes. These results compel a fundamental paradigm revision in strategic management theory, with direct implications for board-level governance design and meta-strategic planning.
Evie HillRiley TaylorMorgan YoungRiley Evans

https://lumoscia.com/index.php/smp/article/view/832

Contemporary strategic management theory has long operated under the assumption that deliberate planning and emergent adaptation constitute a productive tension within organizational design. This article critically re-examines that premise by analyzing dynamic capability orchestration across 214 multinational enterprises operating under compounded macroeconomic and geopolitical disruptions between 2020 and 2024. Employing a mixed-methods design combining structural equation modeling with longitudinal case analysis, we demonstrate that under polycrisis conditions, the deliberate–emergent dichotomy systematically undermines resource reconfiguration efficiency. Our findings reveal that firms achieving superior resilience-adjusted performance indices adopted a third strategic mode—catalytic repositioning—that transcends conventional ambidexterity frameworks. Theoretical contributions include a revised microfoundational taxonomy of managerial cognition and a recalibrated orchestration model applicable to volatile, uncertainty-dominant competitive landscapes.
Edward AdamsRowan ThompsonCasey WrightKim Wilson
