Evaluating Citizen Participation in Environmental Policy Making

Abstract

This article examines the roles and impacts of citizen participation in environmental policy-making processes across diverse democratic settings. It highlights how public involvement can enhance transparency and accountability in government actions, fostering more sustainable policy outcomes. The study draws on case studies from the United States, Germany, and India to illustrate varying levels of citizen engagement and its effects on policy efficacy. Through mixed-methods research, including surveys and interviews with stakeholders, this article identifies best practices and challenges in facilitating meaningful public participation. This paper concludes with policy recommendations to enhance participatory governance in environmental decision-making.
